WHAT IS A VTUBER ?

A VTuber (short for Virtual YouTuber) is an online content creator who uses a virtual avatar instead of appearing on camera themselves.
Some things to know about VTubers:
- The term comes from Japan (mid-2010s), with Kizuna AI widely frequently regarded as one of the first major VTubers.
- VTubers typically use stylized avatars based on anime characters, though they can also take animal, robot or other experimental forms.
- Their models are usually animated in real-time with motion capture or face-tracking software, to produce videos or livestreams.
- The community can engage with the character and the performer behind it, creating unique parasocial dynamics
- Despite there being “Youtube” in the title “VTuber,” VTubers now thrive on Twitch, Bilibili, TikTok, and other platforms.
In short: A VTuber is a digital performer who entertains audiences through a virtual avatar, blending streaming culture with performance, roleplay, and animation.
Though there are VTubers all around the globe, the two most popular languages for VTubers are japanese and english.
Famous english speaking VTubers : Ironmouse, Zentreya, Koseki Bijou, Mori Callioppe
WHAT DO VTUBERS DO ?

VTubers create content as other streamers would: like gaming, chatting, singing, or creative endeavors, but through their avatar.
You can find many type of VTubers online including:
- Gaming VTubers: They play and stream games while chatting with their audience.
- Chatting/ Variety VTubers: They will host talk streams, do reactions, and host a variety of community events.
- Singing/ Music VTubers: They will do covers, original songs, and/or concerts.
- Creative VTubers: They will do art, 3D modeling, writing, or coding streams.
- Experimental VTubers: They will do a mix of slipping VTubing into a tech demo, artificial intelligence, or surreal comedy.
INDIES VS AGENCIES
Indies

Independent VTubers, like Half Bane, are creators who manage their own careers without being tied to a talent agency.
Independent Vtubers (Indies) are freelancers. They have complete creative freedom and full ownership of the character.
They are free to choose their own streaming platforms and content. They design or commission their avatars, handle their own branding, and build their communities on their own terms.
Many indie VTubers start small and grow organically, sometimes achieving massive popularity through networking, consistency, or viral success.
For fans, Indies often feel more approachable, authentic, and flexible in the kind of content they produce.
Key points:
- Full freedom to choose content, design, and platforms
- Self-funded models, edits, and promotion
- Keep most of their income (minus platform fees)
- Growth relies on organic reach, networking, and viral moments
- Own their identity and can continue as long as they choose
Agencies

Agency VTubers are creators signed to talent management companies such as Hololive, Nijisanji, Mythic talent or former VShojo.
VTuber agencies provide professional support, including high-quality 2D or 3D models, marketing, management, and collaborative opportunities with other talents.
In return, Agency VTubers share revenue with the company and often have limited creative control. The character and branding are usually owned by the agency. The trade-off is faster audience growth, stronger visibility, and access to large, loyal fanbases created through cross-promotion and professional production values.
Key Points:
- Must follow company guidelines, characters often owned by the agency
- Professional-quality assets, marketing, and debut hype.
- Revenue is split with the company
- Faster growth thanks to established branding and cross-promotion
- If they graduate (leave), they often lose rights to their avatar
